WuXi AppTec HitS launches the DEL Laboratory in Munich, Germany

WuXi AppTec HitS unit today announced the opening of its DNA Encoded Library (DEL) Laboratory in Munich, Germany. This new lab will facilitate the European clients to get access to DEL technology and related research, accelerating the timeline for hit discovery and drug development.

Global distribution of DEL laboratories

The lab is hosted at Crelux, a subsidiary of WuXi AppTec Co., Ltd. (“WuXi AppTec”), which provides customized services in drug discovery, including protein supply, X-ray crystallography, biophysical and biochemical analyses. Now Munich, along with Shanghai and Boston WuXi AppTec sites, provides full access to the DELopenDELight and DELpro platforms to empower innovation in the field of biomedical sciences.

Screening in the DEL lab

DEL technology has become a disruptive drug discovery technology that facilitates rapid discovery at lower cost. By combining combinatorial chemistry and affinity screening with next generation sequencing technologies, DEL technology can shorten the usual screening time of several months to just 6-8 weeks. Many researchers from pharmaceutical industry, biotech and academia are interested in “first-in-class” targets, which need tailored affinity selection design and careful handling.

Identification of hit compounds

DELopen and DELight are WuXi AppTec HitS’s self-serve product that gives researchers direct access to a collection of billions of compounds. Through these services, WuXi AppTec will provide a DNA Encoded Library kit and a user manual/protocol document to the research organization. Upon receipt of the kit, the researcher will perform affinity selection according to the protocol and return the sample to WuXi AppTec. WuXi AppTec then completes further experiments such as PCR amplification, qPCR assay, purification and NGS (next generation sequencing), and decodes and analyzes the data by a professional technical team and a unique cloud platform. A summary report (excluding structural and DNA sequence information) will be provided back to the researcher, who will make informed decision on follow up actions based on the selection results.

DELopen and DELight kits

The DELopen kit is to advance adoption of DNA Encoded library technology in academia, and promote community data sharing. Initiated through a partnership between WuXi AppTec and leading research institutions, the goal of DELopen is to provide open access to DEL libraries a broad range of academic researchers. Researchers have free access to DEL libraries to discover hits of their own and re-use the bulk data by sharing with the community in an IP-protected manner.

The DELight kit provides biotechnology companies an alternative solution to access vast chemical space provided by the proprietary DNA encoded libraries with over 15 billion compounds. Complementary to the existing DEL business models, this alternative solution is aimed at providing flexible service and more access to the selection data.  Researchers do not need to disclose their target while receive the complete data package of all selected hits, all at a fraction of cost of full-service DEL project.
